Joomla! Has been announced as the winner of the 2006 Open Source CMS Award with Drupal in second place and Plone finishing in third.

One of the fundamental ideals that Packt subscribes to is the belief that Open Source should be promoted, supported, and sustained whenever and however possible. With the Open Source Project Royalty Scheme successfully providing sustainable revenues for projects since 2004, Packt is now excited to announce a further open source initiative; the Open Source CMS Award.

The Packt Open Source Content Management System Award is designed to encourage, support, recognize and reward an Open Source Content Management System (CMS) that has been selected by a panel of judges and visitors to http://www.packtpub.com/.

The initial stage of the Award saw five Open Source Content Management Systems nominated by the public to go through to the final. These finalists were: [listed in alphabetical order]

• Drupal
• e107
• Joomla!
• Plone
• Xoops

Result

The final result, as voted for by judges from The Open Source Collective, MySQL, the Eclipse Foundation, and 16,000 users on http://www.packtpub.com/ saw a tie for first place between Joomla! and Drupal. In the event of a tie, a fourth independent judge would be brought in. This was Apoorv Durga who is a member of CMSPros and runs his own blog [http://apoorv.info/] on portals and content management. This crucial vote ended up with Joomla! triumphing over Drupal by one point.

The final result was as follows:

1. Joomla!- $5,000
2. Drupal - $3,000
3. Plone - $2,000

Award Rules

1. Only nominations for open source Content Management Systems will be counted
2. Only one nomination per person will be counted
3. The five open source Content Management Systems with the most nominations will go through to the final
4. The top three will be voted for by a panel of three judges. A final fourth vote will come from the results of a public vote on http://www.packtpub.com/.
5. All three judges are independent and their decision is final
6. The winning CMS will get US $5,000, the second will get US $3,000 and the third placed finalist will get US $2,000.
7. Packt Publishing has no influence, input or say in the final five or winner of the Award.
